Sarah Beetson

I’m a dual British/Australian Artist and Illustrator.

I graduated with a BA Hons 1st Class in Illustration from Falmouth College of Arts, UK in 2002. I interned in London working in illustration, window design, styling and print design for Mary Portas, POP Magazine and Stella McCartney, who gave me my first major commission when I collaborated on murals in her shop’s shoe room in 2003.
Thereafter I began a career as a freelance illustrator, with a commercial client list including The Telegraph and The Times newspapers, The Miami Herald, Penguin Books, The British Fashion Council, MAC Cosmetics, Delta Airlines, The Wall Street Journal, Ford Germany, Perth Fashion Week, Netflix, Smithsonian Institute, Havaianas AU, St George Bank, Trader Joe’s, New York Magazine, Comic Relief UK and Big Issue AU.

Accolades include a 2010 RADF Arts Development Grant, Adelaide Fringe Festival Award (shortlisted), Creative Review UK’s Best in Book for Illustration 2011, The Metro Award 2012 (shortlisted), 2016 Coney Island Film Festival (shortlisted), and 2017 Illustrated London Best In Show.
I have exhibited in London, Paris, New York, Portland, Ottawa, Melbourne, Sydney, Wollongong, Adelaide, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
I’ve undertaken artist residencies in Coney Island USA and Blackpool UK.
I create my art and illustration work by hand, using a wide variety of mixed media on paper, wood, photographs, fabric and found sculptural objects. My work includes animation and public interactive installations, one featuring an art vending machine selling small $50 works in a Pepsi bottle, and a giant public colouring in wall of my drawings on fabric, which later became wearable art.

My art explores themes of contemporary politics, celebrity, feminism, gender and the perversities of popular culture.
